Two Gold and Two Bronze Winner Citations Announced at Awards Dinner on June 7

JOHNSON CITY, Texas — Old 290 Brewery, located at Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa in the heart of Texas Hill Country, won Gold recognition for its Czech Lager and Hell Raiser Wood Aged Beer, and Bronze awards for Old 290 Brewery’s El Bigote International Mexican Lager and Hawkshaw Helles Munich Style Lager at the 2024 Fredericksburg Craft Beer Festival Awards dinner ceremony held on June 7.

This year’s Craft Beer Competition had 32 breweries competing with 103 entries from competitors and was judged by 19 esteemed craft beer judges.

The Fredericksburg Craft Beer Festival is presented by the Rotary Club of Fredericksburg Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on improving the community and the world with its motto being “Service Above Self”. 80% of proceeds from the Festival, which was held on June 8, will support Rotary’s local charitable efforts with 20% from this year’s event going to the Hill country Community Needs Council.

“Every year the Fredericksburg Craft Beer Festival is a highly successful event for beer, Texas-loving food, and music enthusiasts,” said Jeff Carter, president of Carter Hospitality Group, the operating company for Old 290 Brewery and Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa. “We are proud to participate and thrilled to have taken home the most awards for Old 290 Brewery, showcasing the dedication and hard work of our Head Brewer Justin Zimmerman.”

Zimmerman produces beers with a special handcrafted touch — whether with a refreshing Kolsch that has classic German flavor and aroma or an IPA that has a citrus aroma. He briefly describes Old 290 Brewery’s winning brews in the competition:

  • Gold Winner — Czech Baby — Czech Dark Lager

Brewed with all Czech ingredients: Bohemian base malt, Czech Saaz hops, and classic Czech lager yeast. It is dark copper-colored and slightly roasted.

  • Gold Winner — Hell Raiser Bourbon Brown Ale

This barrel-aged strong beer is brewed with a robust malt bill and aged in Garrison Brothers Balmorhea bourbon barrels for two months, producing notes of vanilla, chocolate, toffee, and bourbon.

  • Bronze Winner — El Bigote International — Mexican Lager

A brilliantly clear, light lager brewed with an old-world attitude — equal parts smooth and crisp, malt-forward with an easy-drinking finish. Great with a lime.

  • Bronze Winner — Hawkshaw Helles — Munich Style Helles Lager

Named after the brewer’s grandfather’s nickname, it is crisp and clean, filtered to a brilliant clarity with a pleasant malty finish.

These award-winning brews and many others can be enjoyed at Old 290 Brewery & Restaurant and at Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa. Equal parts rustic and refined, Old 290 Brewery & Restaurant combines craft beer with hearty, Texas-inspired cuisine. It emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients, along with its craft beer and award-winning wines from Carter Creek Winery. In true Lone Star State fashion, the brewery and restaurant also feature a stage for hosting scheduled local musicians.
